Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)

Regulation (EU) 2025/40, known as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), establishes harmonised requirements for packaging placed on the European Union market. It entered into force on 11 February 2025 and will generally apply from 12 August 2026.

The regulation aims to reduce packaging waste, improve recyclability and strengthen transparency throughout the packaging supply chain. SUHNER Schweiz AG is reviewing and adapting its packaging specifications, supplier requirements and documentation processes as the applicable obligations are introduced.

Our approach to PPWR compliance

Packaging must protect our products, support reliable transport and meet increasing requirements for material use, recyclability, identification and documentation. Our compliance framework is structured around five areas.

1. Packaging registration and data management
Packaging types are recorded and assigned to the relevant products and markets. Information such as packaging material, weight and quantity is maintained to support registration, reporting and extended producer responsibility obligations where applicable.

2. Manufacturer information
Relevant packaging must clearly identify the responsible economic operator. SUHNER manages the required company and contact information consistently across packaging, accompanying documents and, where appropriate, digital data carriers.

3. Declarations of conformity and technical documentation
SUHNER collects and maintains packaging specifications, material composition data, supplier declarations, conformity evidence and internal approval records. Where required, this documentation supports conformity assessment and the preparation of an EU declaration of conformity.

4. Identification and traceability
Packaging types are linked to their specifications, suppliers and revision status. This allows changes to packaging materials or designs to be traced and the relevant compliance documents to be retrieved efficiently.

5. Compliance with substance restrictions
SUHNER requires suitable evidence that packaging materials comply with applicable substance restrictions. This includes the limits for lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium in packaging and packaging components.

Packaging materials and recyclability

The packaging required for a SUHNER product depends on its size, weight, sensitivity and transport conditions. Product protection remains essential. At the same time, we review packaging solutions with a focus on:

  • reducing unnecessary packaging and material use
  • improving the recyclability of packaging components
  • enabling the separation of different materials
  • avoiding unnecessary or difficult-to-recycle material combinations
  • using recycled materials where technically suitable
  • maintaining reliable product protection throughout transport and storage

Continuous implementation

PPWR requirements are introduced in stages and will be supplemented by further technical criteria, calculation methods and implementation rules.

SUHNER monitors these developments and updates packaging specifications, supplier requirements, internal processes and documentation where necessary. This structured approach supports legally compliant packaging, transparent documentation and long-term improvement of packaging recyclability.
